Why Baking Soda is an Effective Ingredient in Deodorant
It may be shocking to learn that baking soda, a commonly found kitchen staple, is the leading champion against stinky, pungent and foul smells. It’s odour-absorbing ability has made it a popular choice in combating underarm odour and the star ingredient in most natural deodorants.
But what exactly is baking soda?
Baking soda is simply sodium bicarbonate, a white solid crystalline derived from a mineral commonly known as soda ash (sodium carbonate). This mineral originates from a rock deposit known as trona found in salt lakes that have evaporated nearly 4 million years ago. It was only once the mineral was mined and processed many, many years later that it led to the growth of baking soda, a household favourite since the late 1800’s.
Everyone is guilty of loving a good, versatile and multi-functional product and well, baking soda delivers on all fronts. The most applauded characteristics linked to sodium bicarbonate are related to the substances’ alkaline pH level. Helping neutralize acidic substances, baking soda is the chosen helper to bake that perfect birthday cake, soothe a heartburn after a spicy burrito or get those tricky, set-in stains out of your clothes. Our favourite of its magical powers however, will forever be its ability to control odour!
Curious how it works in deodorant?
We are all meant to sweat but that doesn’t mean we need to smell funky. Contrary to common belief, sweat is not the culprit behind body odour, sweat itself is actually odourless! It’s the bacteria that forms to break down the sweat into acids that cause for an unpleasant smell to develop. Baking soda antimicrobial benefits help fight off those odour causing bacteria by making the skin more acidic.
Is it right for me?
With increasing concern about the ingredient found in conventional deodorants, it’s no surprise that people are opting towards natural options. 4 commonly found ingredients in commercial deodorants possibly relating to health concerns are:
Aluminum: Linked to the development of breast cancer and Alzheimer’s.Parabens: May increase the risk of cancerous cell development.Triclosan: Might be harmful to the immune system and can disrupt hormone levels. Artificial colours: Can cause skin irritation
