Microplastics: here's how to recognise them in your cosmetics
What are Microplastics, and why should you watch out for them?
Microplastics are minute plastic particles that can be used in various products, from scrubs to lotions. They can be harmful not only to the environment, but also to our health if we unknowingly apply them to our skin. At The Lekker Company, we are determined to make the bathroom routine plastic-free, and that starts with understanding what we apply to our skin.
Tip 1: Pay attention to ingredients such as "Polyethylene" and "Polypropylene"
When reading through the ingredient list of your cosmetics, keep your eyes peeled for terms like "Polyethylene" and "Polypropylene." These are indications that there may be microplastics in the product. These tiny plastic beads may remind you of exfoliation, but they exfoliate the environment and our health just the same. Not great.
Tip 2: Avoid 'PEG' and 'PMMA'
Two more culprits to watch out for: "PEG" and "PMMA." PEG (polyethylene glycol) is a polymer often used in cosmetics and can contain microplastics. PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is often found in products such as nail polish and lip gloss.
Top 3: Opt for Natural Alternatives
At The Lekker Company, we love nature and everything that is good for you and our planet. Opt for products with natural exfoliants such as ground nuts, sugar, salt or coffee. These alternatives not only help to pamper your skin, but also protect the environment. Nice idea right, ingredients you can just eat? Tip 4: Use Tools like the "Beat the Microbead" App
We live in a digital age, which makes it a little easier to find out the truth. There are apps available, such as "Beat the Microbead," that help you scan products and find out if they contain microplastics. This way, you can shop with confidence and make sure your beauty routine stays plastic-free.
At The Lekker Company, we are committed to providing transparent, sustainable and plastic-free products that are good for you and our beloved earth. Recognising microplastics in your cosmetics is a beautiful and logical step towards awareness and change. Say it yourself, microplastics just really can't go on, can they?
Enjoy your skincare without plastic!
